  • 1/1/17 – it is a crime to falsely report a gun as lost or stolen (e.g., lost overboard)
  • 1/1/17 – generally illegal to loan firearm outside of immediate family
  • 1/1/17 – AR’s with bullet buttons now defined as assault weapoins
  • 1/1/17 – cops must now (like the rest of us) store handgun in locked container or locked trunk when left unattended in vehicle
  • 7/1/17 – loss or theft of firearm must be reported to law enforcement within 5 days
  • 7/1/17 – illegal for law-abiding citizens to possess magazines > 10 rounds (also illegal for criminals who observe laws)
  • 12/31/17 – deadline to register new assault weapons (i.e., bullet button AR’s)
  • 1/1/2018 – ammunition transfer must be through licensed ammunition vendor
  • 1/1/2018 – no longer can import ammunition without first shipping to licensed vendor
  • 7/1/2018 – state permission required to manufacture or assemble a firearm
  • 12/31/2018 – deadline to place a serial number on unmarked firearm possessed after 7/1/2018
  • 7/1/2019 – Californians must undergo background checks to buy ammunition
